which EV charger is best for my needs

Which EV Charger Is Right for Your Home?

Choosing the right EV charger depends on your vehicle, electricity tariff and how you plan to charge. Some homeowners prefer simple chargers for overnight charging, while others choose smart chargers that optimise charging based on electricity prices. Scott Electrical can recommend the most suitable option for your home or business. Popular EV chargers in the UK include:

Ohme EV Chargers

Ohme chargers are one of the most popular smart EV chargers in the UK. They automatically adjust charging schedules to take advantage of cheaper electricity tariffs, helping reduce charging costs.

Hypervolt EV Chargers

Hypervolt chargers are known for their modern design and smart functionality. They allow users to monitor and control charging through a mobile app while providing fast and reliable home charging.

Zappi EV Chargers

Zappi chargers are particularly popular with homeowners who have solar panels. They allow electric vehicles to be charged using surplus solar energy, reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Wallbox EV Chargers

Wallbox chargers provide compact, powerful charging solutions with smart charging features and reliable performance.

If you’re unsure which charger is best for your home or workplace, Scott Electrical can provide advice and recommend the most suitable option.

Workplace EV Charging Grants Available

Eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations may be able to claim funding towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points at their workplace through the OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme.

Scott Electrical are OZEV-registered installers and can claim the Workplace Charging Scheme grant on behalf of eligible customers.

The scheme can contribute up to 75% towards the cost of purchasing and installing workplace EV charge points, capped at £500 per socket, with support available for up to 40 sockets across all sites.

We can help with the full process, including site survey, charger selection, installation, testing, commissioning and completion of the OZEV grant claim where applicable.

Whether you require a single workplace charger or a larger EV charging installation for staff, fleet vehicles or visitors, Scott Electrical can provide a professional installation tailored to your site requirements.

All grant funding is subject to OZEV eligibility, approval and scheme terms.

EV Charger FAQs

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
Home EV charger installation typically costs between £800 and £1,200 depending on the charger model, cable length, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. Scott Electrical provides a free, no-obligation quote after assessing your property.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most home installations are completed within 2-4 hours. Commercial or multi-point installations may take longer depending on the number of charge points and any groundworks required.
Do I need planning permission to install an EV charger?
Most homeowners don’t need planning permission for a home EV charger, as it falls under permitted development rights. Exceptions can apply for listed buildings or certain flats, and Scott Electrical can advise on your specific situation.
What's the difference between a tethered and untethered EV charger?
A tethered charger comes with a built-in cable ready to plug into your car, while an untethered charger has a socket where you connect your own charging cable. Tethered units are more convenient, while untethered units offer more flexibility if you switch vehicles.
Can I get a grant towards my EV charger installation?
Yes, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) offers grants that can reduce installation costs. Homeowners in flats or rented properties may be eligible, and businesses, landlords, and charities can claim through the Workplace Charging Scheme. As an OZEV-approved installer, Scott Electrical can check your eligibility and handle the application.
Which EV charger brand is best for my home?
The right charger depends on your vehicle, electricity tariff, and how you plan to charge. Popular options include Ohme (which adjusts charging around cheaper tariffs), Hypervolt (known for sleek design and app control), and Zappi (ideal if you have solar panels). Scott Electrical can recommend the best fit for your needs.
Do I need a dedicated electricity circuit for an EV charger?
Yes, EV chargers require a dedicated circuit run directly from your consumer unit (fuse box) to ensure safe, reliable charging. This is standard practice for all home installations and is included in the installation process.
Is my home's electrical supply suitable for an EV charger?
Most UK homes have a suitable supply for a 7kW charger, but older properties or homes with limited capacity may need an electrical upgrade. Scott Electrical carries out a site survey before installation to confirm your property is suitable.
How long does it take to charge an EV at home?
Charging times vary by vehicle and charger speed. A typical 7kW home charger can fully charge an average EV battery overnight, usually within 6-8 hours, depending on battery size and starting charge level.
Can I install an EV charger if I live in a flat or rented property?
It’s possible, but it depends on factors like parking arrangements, landlord permission, and the building’s electrical infrastructure. Scott Electrical can assess feasibility and discuss available grant support for flats and rented homes.
Do EV chargers work with all electric and hybrid cars?
Most Level 2 home chargers use a universal Type 2 connector compatible with the vast majority of EVs and plug-in hybrids sold in the UK. We’ll confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle during your consultation.
Is an outdoor EV charger weatherproof?
Yes, all EV chargers installed outdoors are rated for outdoor use and built to withstand UK weather conditions, including rain, frost, and temperature changes, with no impact on safety or performance.
What's involved in commercial EV charger installation for businesses?
Commercial installations are tailored to the site, whether that’s a single charge point for staff or a multi-point setup for customers and fleets. Scott Electrical handles everything from electrical capacity assessments to installation and Workplace Charging Scheme grant applications for offices, retail sites, and apartment blocks.
How do I know what size EV charger I need (3.6kW vs 7kW vs 22kW)?
A 7kW charger is the standard choice for most homes and roughly doubles the speed of a 3.6kW unit. 22kW chargers require a three-phase electricity supply and are typically used for commercial sites rather than residential properties. We’ll recommend the right output based on your vehicle and supply.
Do EV chargers need to be serviced or maintained?
EV chargers are generally low-maintenance, but periodic electrical safety checks are recommended, particularly for commercial units with heavy use. Scott Electrical can include EV charger checks as part of routine electrical maintenance visits.
Are EV chargers covered by a warranty and is the installation guaranteed?
Yes, EV chargers come with a manufacturer’s warranty (typically 3 years), and Scott Electrical’s installation work is fully guaranteed and certified, giving you peace of mind for the safety and performance of your charging point.

Paul the Director of Scott Electrical was one of 3 approved installers recommended by EO.
When i rang and spoke to Paul he came across very well and i was confident to give him my job to install the car charger.
The date was confirmed and Paul himself and one of his colleagues arrived on time. They completed the installation without any issues and their work was of a very high order . Furthermore Paul took the time to explain thoroughly the workings of the EO app which is required for use with the charger.
I would certainly recommend Paul /Scott Electrical to my friends and colleagues for any future electrical work.
